CHEAP CAR RENTAL IN SINGAPORE
Drive yourself from Singapore to Malaysia, as far as Kuala Lumpur. Our cross-border fleet is VEP-registered with active RFID tags, and the rate covers insurance extended into Peninsular Malaysia.
Car rental to Malaysia from Singapore carries a surcharge from S$50 per day on top of the standard rate. Saloon cars, SUVs and MPVs are all eligible.
VEP and RFID: What You Need Before You Cross
How the VEP Requirement Works
Every foreign-registered vehicle entering Malaysia needs a Vehicle Entry Permit with an activated RFID tag. Enforcement began in July 2025.
Our cross-border vehicles are already registered and tagged. You do not need to apply for anything yourself. Ask us to confirm VEP status on the specific vehicle when you book.
The permit is read automatically at the checkpoint. No paperwork to hand over.
Penalties for Driving Without VEP
Entering without a valid VEP carries an RM300 fine, roughly S$91. You cannot exit Malaysia until it is paid, and refusal escalates to RM2,000 or up to six months imprisonment.
Entry can also be refused outright if the tag fails to scan. This is why confirming VEP status at collection matters.
Which Vehicles Can Cross the Causeway
Not every car in a rental fleet carries Malaysia coverage. Confirm eligibility at booking.
Saloon Cars
Toyota Vios, Corolla Altis and similar. Suited to one to four passengers with moderate luggage. The most economical option for a Johor Bahru day trip or a couple heading to Melaka.
SUVs and Full Size
Toyota Camry, Honda CRV, Mitsubishi Outlander, Toyota Fortuner. Better highway stability on the North-South Expressway and more boot space for a four-hour drive.
MPVs and 8 Seaters
Honda Odyssey, Toyota Estima, Mitsubishi Grandis and the 8 seater Hyundai Trajet. The right choice when seven or eight people travel together with luggage for all of them.
MPV rental to Malaysia is our most common cross-border booking. See the 7 seater car hire and MPV rental range.
What a Malaysia Trip Actually Costs
Cross-Border Surcharge
From S$50 per day on top of the standard rental rate. This covers the insurance extension into Peninsular Malaysia and the VEP administration.
Road Charge and Tolls
Malaysia deducts an RM20 road charge on each entry. Tolls on the North-South Expressway are deducted as you drive.
Both come from a Touch ’n Go eWallet, which you top up before travelling. Budget around RM150 for a Kuala Lumpur round trip including tolls.
Fuel Rules for Foreign-Registered Cars
Foreign-plated vehicles cannot buy RON95, the subsidised grade. You buy RON97, which is still cheaper than Singapore pump prices.
Singapore Customs also requires the tank to be at least three-quarters full when leaving Singapore. Fill up before you reach the checkpoint.
Where People Drive
Johor Bahru and Desaru
JB is 30 to 60 minutes past the checkpoint outside peak hours. Mid Valley Southkey, IKEA Tebrau and Legoland are the usual stops.
Desaru is around 110km and two hours, popular for beach resorts and golf.
Melaka, Kuala Lumpur and Beyond
Melaka sits roughly 250km away, about three hours on the North-South Expressway. Jonker Street, A Famosa and the Stadthuys are the draws.
Kuala Lumpur is around 350km and four to five hours. Anything beyond KL, such as Penang or Cameron Highlands, is a six to nine hour drive and worth planning an overnight stop.

Border Crossing and Timing
Woodlands or Tuas Second Link
Woodlands is closer to the city and handles most traffic, which is exactly why it queues. Tuas Second Link is further out but consistently lighter.
If you are heading to Melaka or KL, Tuas often saves time overall despite the longer drive to reach it.
When to Avoid Crossing
Friday evenings from 5pm. Sunday afternoons and evenings. Weekday mornings between 7am and 10am. Singapore school holidays and Malaysian public holidays.
If you have to cross in one of those windows, add 60 to 90 minutes.
Documentation requirements are covered in road tax coverage and Malaysia entry requirements.
